Finding the Right Patio Heater for You

September 10, 2023

Patio heaters are one of the simplest ways to extend your outdoor living season in Las Vegas. From cool November evenings to chilly January nights, the right patio heater lets you entertain, dine, and relax outside in comfort. Here is a practical guide to help you choose the type, fuel source, and style that fits your space.

Fuel Types: Propane, Natural Gas, and Electric

Propane patio heaters are the most common and the most portable. They use a standard 20-pound propane tank (the same size used for gas grills) and can be placed anywhere on your patio. A full tank provides approximately 8 to 12 hours of heat depending on the output setting. The trade-off is that you need to swap or refill tanks periodically.

Natural gas patio heaters connect directly to your home's gas line, which means you never run out of fuel. The downside is that they require a gas line to be run to the patio, which involves installation costs and a fixed placement. If you already have a gas line for an outdoor grill or fire pit, adding a patio heater connection may be straightforward.

Electric patio heaters use infrared elements to produce radiant heat. They are clean, quiet, and work well in covered or semi-enclosed patio areas. They require an outdoor-rated electrical outlet and typically produce less total heat than gas models, but they are effective for smaller spaces and areas close to seating.

BTU Ratings: How Much Heat Do You Need?

Patio heater output is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) for gas models and watts for electric models. Here is a general guide:

  • Small tabletop heaters: 10,000 to 12,000 BTUs. Good for warming a table for two or a small seating area.
  • Mid-range tower heaters: 30,000 to 40,000 BTUs. The most popular choice for Las Vegas backyards. They warm an area of about 15 to 20 feet in diameter.
  • Commercial-grade heaters: 40,000 to 48,000 BTUs. Designed for restaurants, hotels, and large residential patios with open exposure.

For most Las Vegas homes, a 40,000 BTU tower-style propane heater provides the best balance of heat coverage and cost.

Tower vs. Tabletop vs. Mounted

Tower heaters (also called mushroom or pyramid heaters) stand about 7 to 8 feet tall and radiate heat downward and outward in a wide radius. They are the most popular style for open patios and poolside areas.

Tabletop heaters are smaller, portable units that sit on a table or counter. They provide localized heat and are ideal for intimate dining areas or balconies.

Wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted heaters are typically electric and work best in covered patios, pergolas, and enclosed outdoor rooms. They stay out of the way, require no floor space, and can be angled to direct heat exactly where you need it.

Las Vegas Outdoor Use

The desert climate creates specific conditions to plan for. Wind is the biggest factor. Gas tower heaters should be placed in areas with some wind protection, or you will lose a significant amount of heat. Dust is another consideration. Keep burner heads and reflectors clean to maintain performance, especially during spring windstorms.

The good news is that Las Vegas winter temperatures rarely drop below the mid-30s, so a quality patio heater easily makes outdoor spaces comfortable even on the coldest nights. Many of our customers use their patio heaters from October through March.
