Electric Fireplaces: Step Up Your Heating in Style

October 25, 2023

Electric fireplaces have come a long way from the glowing plastic logs of decades past. Today's models produce realistic flame effects, deliver practical zone heating, and install in places where a gas fireplace simply cannot go. If you are looking to add warmth and visual appeal to your Las Vegas home without a major renovation, an electric fireplace deserves a serious look.

Zone Heating That Saves Money

Zone heating means warming the room you are actually using rather than heating the entire house. Electric fireplaces are excellent at this. Most models produce about 5,000 BTUs using a 1,500-watt heater, which is enough to warm a 400-square-foot room. By turning down your central thermostat and using the electric fireplace in your living room or bedroom, you can reduce your overall heating bill during the Las Vegas winter months.

No Venting Required

One of the biggest advantages of electric fireplaces is the complete absence of venting requirements. Gas fireplaces need a direct vent or B-vent to exhaust combustion gases. Electric models produce no emissions at all, so they can be placed on any wall, in any room, on any floor of your home. This opens up possibilities that gas simply cannot match, including interior walls, upper-floor bedrooms, and apartments or condos where exterior venting is not an option.

Wall-Mount and Built-In Options

Electric fireplaces come in several form factors. Wall-mount models hang on the wall like a flat-screen TV and require only a standard outlet behind them. Built-in models recess into a framed opening for a flush, integrated look. Fireplace inserts fit into existing fireplace openings to convert an old wood-burning or non-functional fireplace into an electric unit. There are also freestanding models that sit on the floor and can be moved from room to room.

Flame-Only Mode

Most electric fireplaces include a flame-only setting that runs the LED flame effect without activating the heater. In Las Vegas, where daytime temperatures can reach 100 degrees or more from May through September, flame-only mode lets you enjoy the visual ambiance of a fireplace year-round without adding a single degree to the room. This feature alone makes electric models appealing in the desert climate.

Energy Efficiency

Electric fireplaces convert nearly 100 percent of the electricity they consume into heat, with no energy lost through a vent or chimney. The typical operating cost is about 15 to 20 cents per hour on the heat setting and just 1 to 3 cents per hour on flame-only mode. Over a season of moderate use, most homeowners spend between $30 and $60 on electricity for their electric fireplace.
