It replaces old curtains or worn-out sliding doors with clean, modern glass that makes the bathroom look and feel completely different. But with several enclosure styles and glass options available, it helps to understand the differences before you start your project.
Frameless Enclosures
Frameless shower enclosures are the top choice for modern bathrooms. They use thick tempered glass, typically 3/8-inch or 1/2-inch, with minimal hardware. There are no bulky metal frames around the edges of the glass. Instead, the panels are supported by hinges, clips, and channels that are nearly invisible. Frameless enclosures create an open, airy feel and are easier to keep clean because there are fewer metal components where water and soap scum can collect.
Semi-Frameless Enclosures
Semi-frameless enclosures split the difference between fully framed and frameless designs. The fixed panels sit in a metal channel for added support, but the door itself has no frame. This design offers structural stability at a lower price point than a fully frameless system. Semi- frameless enclosures are a solid choice if you want a clean look without the higher cost of going completely frameless.
Framed Enclosures
Framed shower enclosures have metal frames around every panel and the door. They are the most affordable option and use thinner glass because the frame provides the structural support. While they do not have the same sleek appearance as frameless designs, modern framed enclosures with slim profiles and updated finishes still look sharp. They are a practical choice for guest bathrooms, rental properties, and budget-conscious remodels.
Neo-Angle and Walk-In Designs
Neo-angle enclosures are designed for corner showers with an angled front entry. They use three glass panels to create a diamond-shaped opening, making the most of limited floor space. Walk-in enclosures, on the other hand, are open on one end with no door at all. A single fixed glass panel keeps water contained while allowing easy entry. Walk-in designs are especially popular in larger master bathrooms and are ideal for accessibility.
Glass Types
Clear glass is the most common choice, but it is not the only option. Frosted glass provides privacy, rain glass has a textured pattern that obscures the view while letting light through, and low-iron glass offers extra clarity without the slight green tint of standard glass. Tinted options in gray and bronze are also available for a warmer, more subdued look. Protective coatings that repel water and resist mineral buildup are recommended for all glass types, especially in Las Vegas where the water is hard.
