Tips for Designing a Custom Wine Cellar

February 1, 2023

A custom wine cellar adds both function and character to a Las Vegas home. Whether you are converting an underused closet or building a dedicated room, the right design choices will protect your collection and create a space worth showing off. Glass enclosures have become especially popular because they let you display your bottles while maintaining the controlled environment wine requires.

Glass Enclosures for Wine Cellars

A glass wall or glass door on your wine cellar gives you full visibility into the collection without opening the door and disrupting the temperature. Tempered glass panels are the standard choice because they handle temperature differentials between the cooled cellar and the rest of the home. For larger cellars, full glass walls with a glass door create a dramatic display that works especially well in open living areas and dining rooms.

Climate Control Is Non-Negotiable

Las Vegas heat makes climate control the most important part of any wine cellar project. Wine should be stored between 55 and 58 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity between 50 and 70 percent. A dedicated cooling unit designed for wine storage is essential. Standard HVAC systems cannot maintain the precise temperature and humidity levels that wine needs. Your cooling unit should be sized to match the volume of the cellar, and the room must be properly sealed to keep the system from overworking.

Insulation and Vapor Barriers

Because of the extreme temperature difference between a wine cellar and the surrounding home in Las Vegas, proper insulation is critical. Walls, ceiling, and floor all need insulation, and a vapor barrier on the warm side prevents condensation from forming inside the walls. Skipping this step leads to moisture problems, mold, and potential damage to both the structure and your wine. If you are using glass walls, make sure the glass is insulated or double-paned to minimize heat transfer.

Display Lighting

The right lighting turns a wine cellar into a showpiece. LED lighting is the preferred option because it produces very little heat, which is important in a temperature-controlled space. Recessed LEDs, under-shelf lighting, and backlit racking all work well. Avoid incandescent or halogen bulbs, which generate too much heat and can affect the cellar temperature. Dimmable LED strips along the shelving let you set the mood for entertaining while keeping conditions stable.

Las Vegas Home Trends

Wine cellars have become a sought-after feature in Las Vegas luxury homes and even in mid-range remodels. Many homeowners are building compact wine walls in their kitchens or dining rooms rather than dedicating an entire room. These smaller installations use a glass front with climate-controlled cabinetry behind it, holding anywhere from 100 to 300 bottles. Hearth and Home Specialties builds custom glass enclosures for wine cellars of all sizes, from a single glass door to a full wall-to-wall display.
