Boulder City is unlike anywhere else in the Las Vegas valley. Founded in the 1930s as housing for the workers who built Hoover Dam, it has maintained its small-town identity with a strict growth control ordinance that limits new construction. There is no gaming here, the historic downtown along Nevada Way has locally owned shops and restaurants, and the pace of life is noticeably slower than the rest of Clark County. The city sits at the gateway to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, and it sits a bit higher in elevation than the valley floor, making it a touch cooler in summer.
